The Mykola Hryshko National Botanical Garden is a large historical and biological complex in the center of Kyiv. This is one of the favorite vacation spots of citizens and tourists. This is facilitated by the unique structure of the garden. According to the plan of the founders, the complex was to reflect the breadth of nature of Ukraine and the whole of Eurasia. The idea to establish a botanical garden arose in the fall of 1918, when the National Academy of Sciences was established. The project was successfully implemented.
The Botanical Garden is part of the nature reserve fund of Ukraine and is the object of comprehensive protection, belongs to the lands of natural and historical and cultural purposes, which are protected as a national heritage of the state. One of the main tasks of the botanical garden is to conduct research in the field of nature protection, to create a base for the preservation of the gene pool of plants and all biological diversity, as well as educational activities on ecology and plant use. According to the diversity of collections of living plants, the scale of the territory, the level of scientific research, it is one of the leading places among the largest botanical gardens in Europe.
Botanical Garden Mykola Hryshko has about 11,180 species of plants in his collection and covers an area of 117 hectares. 150 species of rare and endangered plants grow on the site, 100 of which are listed in the Red Book of Ukraine. The main direction of research is the study of ontogenesis, in particular the reproductive process, issues of accelerated vegetative and seed reproduction. Considerable attention is paid to the repatriation of plants to natural conditions to restore disturbed populations to normal. The greenhouse complex deserves special attention, where tropical, subtropical, desert plants are presented. The greenhouse reproduces all the conditions of the regions where these plants come from. The total area of the greenhouse complex is over 2,000 sq.m.
Also on the territory of the "Garden of Eden" - a pavilion with exotic plants and animals. The National Botanical Garden consists of 8 scientific departments and 2 laboratories that conduct research on the introduction and acclimatization of plants, preservation of the gene pool of endemic, relict, rare and endangered species, selection of flower and ornamental, fruit, vegetable and forage crops, biotechnology, medical botany, phytodesign, chemical interaction of plants.
The unique collections of plants from different botanical and geographical regions of the world, collected in the Garden, are a reliable basis for the creation of new crops and hybrids and the further development of breeding research. NBS is a leading research institution in Ukraine in the field of introduction and acclimatization of plants and one of the 12 largest botanical gardens in the world.
NBS heads the Council of Botanical Gardens and Arboretums of Ukraine, coordinates their activities, prepares scientific staff in botany, ecology and plant physiology for universities and botanical institutions of Ukraine. In scientific, scientific-organizational and cultural-educational activity NBS has achieved the highest indicators among domestic botanical gardens in terms of mobilization and use of plant resources of our country and the world, preservation of plant diversity, development of green building and agriculture, improvement of botanical and ecological culture.
The National Botanical Garden named after MM Grishko has created unique collections of flower-ornamental, medicinal, fruit, vegetable, spicy-aromatic, fodder and technical plants from all botanical-geographical regions of the world, which number more than 10 thousand species, forms and varieties. . These huge collections are of great scientific and economic importance. In particular, the Garden has the world's best collection of dogwood forms, the largest in Eastern Europe collection of oak, maple, linden, birch, walnut, lilac, wild fruit plants.
Of particular value is the collection of tropical and subtropical plants. The only collection of open-air flower plants in Ukraine (4000 species and varieties), which presents all groups of flower crops - collections of astilbe, hyacinths, gladiolus, dahlias, lilies, roosters, peonies, tulips, chrysanthemums, asters, canna, lawn and ornamental grasses .
Also, when spring comes, the garden grows about 10 species of magnolias. The tulip tree also belongs to the magnolia family. The magnolia garden was established in 1966. It is located in a cozy place of the botanical garden - its southern part. The choice of location is not accidental, as magnolias are not indifferent to warmth and comfort. Between the garden of magnolias and the area of rosacea grow rare plants, mostly heat-loving: styrax, pterostyrax bristly, idezia, abelia corymbose, Japanese crimson and others.
